Ya'at'eeh,
Happy New Year to you all,
Peabody Coal Company and Salt River Project has pulled a fast one on
our local Navajo and Hopi communities this pas holiday! Attached is
the "Black Mesa Project EIS Fact Sheet" that local environmental
justice and enviromental groups put together on what you should know
about the Black Mesa Project Draft Enviromental Impact Statement.
Public comment deadline for the Draft EIS is scheduled for Feburary 6,
2007. The Draft EIS is a 758-page document that we have been trying
to decipher to make our comments, Peabody Western Coal Company and SRP
seek the following:
- The expansion and Life-of-Mine permit for the Black Mesa Mine,
- The use of pristinge groundwater from the Navajo and Coconino Aquifer
(6,000) acf/yr,
- A coal-washing facility,
- The re-opening and re-building of the 273-mile coal slurry pipeline
used to transport coal,
- A new 108-mile water pipeline from Leupp, AZ to the Black Mesa Mine,
The re-opening of one of the most polluting coal-fired power plants
in the west-Mohave Generating Station located in Laughlin, Nevada,
** This plan would relocate 17 more families on Black Mesa! and prevent at least 55 Leupp area families from accessing part of their lands or even be relocated! **
Public hearings for the Draft EIS begin today in Window Rock January 2, 2007!
Anyone can submit comments and if you are able please submit them to
the Office of Surface Mining:
