Campus Climate Challenge is a nation-wide campaign engaging students from all backgrounds to address global warming and climate change. Global warming and climate change will affect everyone but it will affect us Native folk more! This we where we come in, Black Mesa Water Coalition is working with Southwest Native students (K-college) on global warming awareness and steps schools can take to reduce carbon emissions on their campuses.

  • November 2-5, 2007: Power Shift 2007 @ University of Maryland, Washington D.C.

    Took a delegation of 17 native people (youth, students, and adults) to participate in the first-ever national youth summit on climate change. We were apart of thousands of youth who got together to solve the climate crisis by attending workshops and panels, listening to speakers and good music, and educating on Capitol Hill.

  • May 2007: Featured in Vanity Fair’s "The Green Issue"

  • March 30 – April 1, 2007: Southwest Climate Justice Summit

    Students and community members from across the Southwest participated in the first Southwest Climate Justice Summit. The summit focused on energy, global warming, and the power of students and young people to help stop the climate crisis by organizing both on and off campus for clean energy solutions.

Glossary

Global Warming: The progressive gradual rise of the Earth's average surface temperature thought to be caused in part by increased concentrations of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in the atmosphere.

Climate Change: Refers to changes in long-term trends in the average climate, such as changes in average temperatures. In IPCC usage, climate change refers to any change in climate over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activity. In UNFCCC usage, climate change refers to a change in climate that is attributable directly or indirectly to human activity that alters atmospheric composition.
